Postdoctoral fellow for prediction and classification of transport proteins
Join a team project applying machine learning and Big Data technologies to explore host-microbiome interactions by studying transport proteins in particular, membrane proteins in general. The team consists of faculty in bioinformatics, and Big Data, a software developer, three graduate students, and undergraduates. The end users for our classification tools have established research teams studying microbiomes in agriculture.
Responsibilities:
Tackle two challenging problems: predict the substrate specificity of transmembrane transport proteins; and develop a correspondence between different classification schemes for transporters. Provide innovative solutions to the difficult problems beyond the capability of graduate students on the project, that you will help mentor. Develop tools. Write publications.
Qualifications:
A PhD in bioinformatics with an emphasis on machine learning, preferably in functional annotation of proteins, protein structure, or phylogenomics. Good programming skills (Python, Java) essential; familiarity with Gene Ontology, ChEBI, and curation of proteins in UniProt desirable; experience with cluster computing and Hadoop is an asset.
