Lead, Knowledge and Research Exchange
This high-profile position involves engaging with leading faculty across Canada and beyond to realize CBW’s mission to accelerate the use of bioinformatics as a tool in health and life sciences through education, networking, and outreach, and CBW’s vision is to become a leader in bioinformatics education, networking, and outreach. The role also involves representing bioinformatics.ca on an international stage and ensuring that it is globally competitive.
Additionally, the KRE position plays an active role in developing and leading a wide variety of awareness and educational activities for OICR to ensure that OICR’s research activities are translated to both internal and external audiences. The KRE Lead therefore interacts with researchers across the organization to understand their research and translational objectives, and collaborates with teams to lead the development of knowledge and research exchange activities including torbug.org, workshops and hands-on training for staff, high school and university outreach activities, or other novel engagement activities.
Reporting into the Senior Program Manager for Adaptive Oncology, the KRE Lead takes a leadership role in the identification of new grant opportunities to support their role and authors these for supporting CBW or other outreach activities. This role also interacts frequently with the Communications and Finance departments, other Program Managers and Executive at OICR, and bioinformatics.ca stakeholders across Canada. Historically, OICR and bioinformatics.ca have had a very active role in the international Bioinformatics/Computational Biology community, and this role will continue these activities.
Responsibilities:
Develop current and new bioinformatics.ca workshops, monitoring research needs for new training opportunities;
Manage the logistics and delivery of bioinformatics.ca Canadian Bioinformatics Workshop series (11 workshops in 2018) across Canada;
Maintain bioinformatics.ca website and brand as the top source for high-quality bioinformatics training materials, workshops, jobs, and resources in Canada. Oversee website upgrades;
Oversee the bioinformatics.ca social media accounts (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube);
Coordinate an annual educational board meeting for bioinformatics.ca with key stakeholders from across Canada, ensuring bioinformatics.ca accountability and educational leadership;
Manage the bioinformatics.ca budget;
Seek, author and submit funding applications to enhance the activities Bioinformatics.ca and OICR can offer;
Seek and determine fit of innovative learning and networking approaches to enhance the participant experience at bioinformatics.ca workshops and build a bioinformatics community;
Represent bioinformatics.ca and ensure competitiveness in the Global Organisation for Bioinformatics Learning, Education and Training (GOBLET) and ISCB through participation in committees, working groups, and conferences;
Develop and lead OICR’s outreach education strategy and operating plans;
Collaborate and participate where appropriate in existing external science education programs in support of OICR’s outreach education plan, such as Science Teachers Association of Ontario and Café Scientifique, etc.;
Represent OICR and its research activities to high school and post-secondary institutions;
Assist in coordination of OICR’s Translational Research Conference (TRC) with focus on attendees, agenda, and poster session among other tasks as they relate to education and outreach;
Provide education and training to various audience groups, such as advanced researchers who participate in the Canadian Bioinformatics Workshops (CBW), public at various outreach and scientific conference events, high school students during hands-on training programs and lectures, etc
Qualifications:
Ph.D. degree in a life science-related discipline, or equivalent experience is desired (not limited to cancer biology);
Minimum of three (3) years of bioinformatics knowledge and/or experience;
Project management experience is desirable;
CIHR, Genome Canada and/or NSERC grant writing knowledge and experience;
Proven ability to think and work independently, as well as within a team;
Excellent written, organizational and communication skills;
Excellent computer skills, specifically in Windows, MacOS and Unix/Linux, but also with spreadsheet, word processing and presentation packages.
Experience with R/Rstudio also an asset.
Some experience/knowledge of website content entries and the use of GitHub.
Excellent financial management skills, budget forecasting and reporting skills
