Postdoctoral Position in Bioinformatics and Computational Metagenomics

The PDF position will be a 1-year position, with the potential for extension. Successful applicants will receive an annual salary of $40,000 plus benefits. Anticipated start date: September 1, 2019 or sooner.

The successful applicant will be affiliated with the Department of Biology at the University of Waterloo, and the Waterloo Centre for Microbial Research (WCMR), and will have opportunities to collaborate with a growing and diverse group of experimental and computational biologists.

Responsibilities:

  • Development of computational pipelines for binning, functional annotation, and comparison of metagenomic datasets.
  • Development of new tools for visualization and comparison of functional profiles across metagenomes and metagenome-assembled genomes.
  • Application of the above tools to newly generated metagenomic datasets collected from deep subsurface environments and aquatic samples, and analysis of genomes of cultured isolates from these environments.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, metagenomics, or microbiology / microbial ecology with significant bioinformatics experience
  • Strong analytical and statistical knowledge
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work well in a collaborative setting
  • Experience with:
  • Linux, common bioinformatics tools, R, and Python or other scripting languages
  • Web Development Frameworks (e.g., Django, Flask, JavaScript, React)
  • Git
  • Cloud-based environments
  • Methods for visualization and analysis of high-throughput omics data
