Genomics Research Programmer

The role is ideally suited for a creative individual with a strong interest in software development and testing, data analysis, and automation within a high throughput academic setting.

Responsibilities:

Duties/Accountabilities:

• Assist in the design and implementation of automating bioinformatic pipelines to meet objectives of the project. • Work with other project team members to develop and test code, and implement software. • Assist in management of observed sequence variation databases, and integrating internal and external variant databases. • Produce thorough but concise written documentation of algorithms, validations, SOPs, and other processes and procedures as required.

Skills and Abilities:

• Expertise with Python; able to provide links to code samples via GitHub or other open repository. • Comfortable working in a Unix environment; experience with shell scripting and common command-line tools. • Functional knowledge of distributed version control systems such as SVN or GIT. • Experience in statistical analysis using modern computational tools; experience with any relevant tools will be considered, but R and Python are preferred. • Experience with software testing and cluster computing. • Able to collaborate and write software in a team environment. • Familiar with Agile software practices. The successful candidate will have: • Excellent time management and communication skills. • Demonstrated interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively with others in a team environment. • Demonstrated ability to efficiently organize work assignments and establish priorities.

Qualifications:

• Graduation from a recognized Bachelor of Science Program in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, or other relevant field. A Master’s degree in a relevant field would be a strong asset.
• Two (2) years of recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience acceptable to the Medical Director of the Centre of Clinical Genomics.
